How the estimate works

The calculator converts the serving to millilitres, multiplies by ABV, and uses the density of ethanol to estimate grams of pure alcohol. It then applies the FDA's specific factor of 7.07 calories per gram. Entered carbohydrate adds 4 calories per gram.

U.S. standard drinks = estimated grams of pure alcohol ÷ 14. NIAAA and CDC define one U.S. standard drink as about 14 grams of pure alcohol. The standard-drink amount is a reference for alcohol content, not a serving recommendation.

Example: 12 fl oz at 5% ABV

Twelve U.S. fluid ounces is about 355 mL. At 5% ABV, that contains roughly 17.7 mL, or 14 grams, of pure alcohol. Using 7.07 calories per gram gives about 99 calories from alcohol before any carbohydrate or other ingredients are added.

Prefer a complete label when you have one

ABV only describes ethanol. Beer, wine, liqueur, and cocktails can also contain carbohydrate or other energy-bearing ingredients. If a reliable label gives calories for the exact serving, log that value. Do not add this calculator's result on top of the label total.

Why alcohol is usually absent from the panel

Most alcoholic drinks have historically carried no nutrition information panel, which is why a database entry for a beer or a glass of wine is so often a guess. Labelling rules for alcohol differ from those for food and have been changing, so what appears on a bottle depends on where and when it was produced.

That is the case this calculator exists for. ABV and volume are printed on almost every bottle, and those two numbers are enough to estimate the energy from the alcohol itself without a panel.

On the factor: this page uses the FDA specific value of 7.07 calories per gram. EU labelling rules round ethanol to 7 kcal per gram in the Annex XIV table. The difference is about 1% and is far smaller than the uncertainty in a free-poured measure.

The mixer is often the larger number

A spirit measure carries the alcohol; the drink around it frequently carries more energy than the spirit does. Regular soft drinks, tonic, juice, cordial, syrups and cream liqueurs all add carbohydrate on top, and cocktails can carry several servings of sugar before any spirit is counted.

Enter those grams in the carbohydrate field rather than ignoring them. Diet mixers and soda water genuinely add close to nothing, which makes them the one easy substitution here.

Beer and wine are their own case, because residual carbohydrate varies with style. A dry wine and a sweet one at the same ABV are not the same drink nutritionally.
