Divide calories by grams
If a 150 g portion contains 180 calories, its calorie density is 180 ÷ 150 = 1.2 kcal per gram. Multiply by 100 to express the same value as 120 calories per 100 g.
Calories per gram = calories in the portion ÷ portion weight in grams
The tool also reverses the equation. At 1.2 kcal/g, about 83.3 g provides 100 calories. If you already have a per-100g label and only need the opposite conversion, use the 100 calories to grams calculator.
Use the same basis for both foods
Package serving sizes are chosen independently, so comparing “one serving” with “one serving” can hide the difference in weight. Calories per 100 g puts both foods on an equal-weight basis.

Weight and plate volume are not identical
Calorie density usually uses grams. Volume uses millilitres, cups, or the physical space food takes up. Fifty grams of popcorn and 50 g of a compact food may have similar calories per gram while looking very different in a bowl.
Water and air can change the amount of space a food occupies. Compare foods in the way that answers your question: equal weight for calorie density, or an actual measured serving when portion size is what matters.
The result is not a food-quality score
A lower number does not make a food nutritionally complete, and a higher number does not make a food harmful. Nuts, oils, cheese, and other compact foods can be energy dense while contributing nutrients or fitting comfortably into a meal.
Calorie density also cannot predict exactly how full you will feel. Protein, fiber, food texture, eating rate, preparation, meal composition, and individual appetite all matter. Use the comparison to understand the label, not to sort foods into moral categories.
What research can support
The USDA Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review defines energy density as calories in a given weight of food and reports strong, consistent evidence that relatively low-energy-density dietary patterns support adult weight loss and maintenance.
The appetite story is less tidy. A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials found an increase in reported fullness but no significant effect on hunger, with substantial variation between studies. That is one reason this calculator reports the arithmetic without promising satiety or weight loss.

Common questions
Are Calories and kcal the same on food labels?
In nutrition, a capital-C Calorie is one kilocalorie, abbreviated kcal. This tool uses the two terms in that food-label sense.
Can I enter fluid ounces or cups?
No. The denominator must be grams. A kitchen scale or a label that includes gram weight gives you the needed basis.
What if a food has zero calories?
The calculated density is zero for the entered portion. Food-label rounding can display zero for very small amounts, so the package value may not describe a larger portion exactly.
