Short answer

Add the calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fat from every ingredient. Then either divide those totals into equal servings or use the finished recipe weight to calculate the share you actually ate.

When you did not cook it, none of the ingredient weights are available. Tracking a meal someone else cooked works from the plate instead of the recipe.

The arithmetic is simple. The awkward part is keeping the source and portion consistent. Use the package label for a branded ingredient or a reputable food database such as USDA FoodData Central. Keep the amount and food state together, such as 100 grams of dry rice or 100 grams of cooked rice.

A repeatable five-step method

  1. List every ingredient that contributes energy. Include cooking oil, butter, sauces, dressings, cheese, and toppings.
  2. Record the amount you used. Match it to the unit on the label or database entry.
  3. Add the full recipe. Total calories, protein, carbs, and fat before thinking about portions.
  4. Record the yield. Choose a fixed number of equal servings, or weigh the finished edible batch after cooking.
  5. Save the recipe. Reuse it next time and edit only what changed.

Method 1: divide by servings

If a recipe makes four genuinely similar containers, divide every total by four. This is fast and works well when you portion the whole batch at once.

Method 2: divide by cooked weight

For soup, curry, pasta, or any mixed dish, weigh the finished food without the pot. Divide the recipe totals by that cooked weight to get nutrition per gram. At mealtime, multiply by the weight of your portion.

Cooking can change water weight, so raw and finished weights are not interchangeable. The recipe's total nutrition still comes from the ingredients you entered; the final weight only helps distribute that total across portions. A worked meal-prep example

Suppose the full recipe contains 2,400 calories, 160 grams of protein, 280 grams of carbs, and 72 grams of fat. The cooked batch weighs 1,800 grams.

A 450-gram bowl is one quarter of the batch: 450 ÷ 1,800 = 0.25. Multiply each recipe total by 0.25. That portion has an estimated 600 calories, 40 grams of protein, 70 grams of carbs, and 18 grams of fat.

The mistakes that change the result most

  • Forgetting cooking fat. Oil left in the pan may be hard to judge, but leaving it out entirely creates a confident-looking underestimate. Use the cooking oil tracking method when the amount matters.
  • Mixing dry and cooked entries. A database value for dry pasta cannot be paired with its cooked weight.
  • Reading a label as the whole package. The FDA notes that label values are usually listed per serving, and one package may contain several servings. Check both fields before adding the ingredient.
  • Calling unequal bowls equal servings. Use cooked weight when portions vary.
  • Reusing an old recipe after a large change. Clone or edit the saved recipe when the ingredient amounts change.

Recipe calculations are estimates, not lab analysis or medical advice. Food composition varies, labels are rounded, and some food stays in the pan or pot. Consistent inputs are usually more useful for a personal journal than chasing false precision.
