How do you calculate cost per gram of protein?
Cost per gram of protein is the package price divided by the total grams of protein in that package. If a Greek yogurt tub costs 5.49 dollars, has 5 servings, and each serving has 17g protein, the package has 85g protein and costs about 0.065 dollars per gram. That lets you compare different formats such as eggs, tuna, tofu, chicken, beans, protein powder, and ready-to-drink shakes on the same local price basis. The lower number is cheaper for protein alone, but it is not automatically the better food. Calories, sodium, fiber, prep time, dietary fit, storage, taste, and how much of the package you will actually eat can change the decision. Use your local price and the label in front of you, because protein prices and grocery deals move faster than static cheap-protein lists.
How to use the protein cost calculator
- Enter the package price, not the price per serving.
- Enter servings per package and protein per serving from the same label.
- Add calories per serving if you want to compare how many calories come with your protein target.
- Change the target from 25g if your usual meal target is different.
For the reasoning behind the comparison, including the second cost most people skip, see what a gram of protein costs you.
If a label lists protein for the whole container, set servings to 1 and enter the whole-container protein value. If the package has drained weight, prepared weight, or several label columns, use the column that matches what you will eat.

Compare price, protein, and calories together
The cheapest protein source can still be awkward for your day if it needs a lot of calories, requires cooking you will not do, or comes in a package size you waste. Recent meal-prep discussions show people checking reheating, sauce, sodium, and whether a high-protein bowl is useful for cutting or bulking. That is why this tool reports the money number beside calories for the same protein amount.
For a calorie-focused comparison, use the protein per 100 calories calculator. For the daily target itself, use the protein range calculator. If the food is protein powder, the protein powder scoop calculator scales full and partial scoops from the label. If you choose a food and need to scale the serving, use the serving size and portion calculator.
Why protein value is worth recalculating now
Recent community threads in August 2026 show the practical side of high-protein eating: users in r/fitmeals compared high-protein foods, asked whether 930 calories for 52g protein made sense for their goal, and looked for simple meals they could repeat. r/MealPrepSunday threads with thousands of upvotes centered on low-calorie, high-protein batch meals, but the comments still checked reheating, sauce, and sodium. r/EatCheapAndHealthy also had fresh vegetarian protein discussion, including Indian food ideas.
Recent market coverage has also kept protein pricing in the news. A Financial Times report on 25 August 2026 described pressure on whey protein pricing as high-protein diets and GLP-1 use drive demand. A May 2026 New Hope report described whey supply pressure and brands looking at alternate protein ingredients. Static lists can help you brainstorm, but your store price is still the number that decides the calculation.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans describe protein foods broadly, including seafood, lean meats, poultry, eggs, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, and soy products. This calculator can compare many of those foods by price, but it does not replace personal nutrition advice.
What this calculator should not decide
Do not use one low cost number to override allergies, medical instructions, digestive tolerance, food access, or eating patterns that feel stressful. The result also does not measure amino acid quality, mercury exposure, food safety, added sugar, sodium, or micronutrients.
Use it as a shopping and logging aid. After you buy the food, Mori can turn the meal into an editable calorie and macro estimate so the price decision and the logged portion stay connected.
