How to use the protein-to-calorie calculator

- Give each food a clear name so the comparison sentence is easy to read.
- Use the highest ratio only as a starting point, then compare the portions and the rest of each label.

What each result means
Grams per 100 calories
This is the main protein-density result: protein grams ÷ calories × 100. It makes labels with different serving sizes easier to compare.
Calories per 10 grams of protein
This reverses the comparison. It answers how many calories you would consume to get 10 grams of protein if the food scaled evenly. Lower is more protein-efficient under this narrow measure.
Percent of calories from protein
This estimate multiplies protein grams by 4, divides by total calories, and multiplies by 100. Label rounding can keep it from matching the printed total perfectly.
Example comparison
The default entries compare 20 grams of protein in 200 calories with 12 grams in 180 calories. Option A provides 10 grams per 100 calories. Option B provides 6.7 grams. Option A is more protein-efficient, even though the entered serving has more total calories.
Try doubling both calories and protein for one food. Its ratio will stay the same. That is why this tool can compare different label serving sizes when each pair of numbers is internally consistent.
Three label checks before trusting the answer
- Do not mix columns. A dual-column label may show one serving and the whole package side by side.
- Match preparation state. Prepared, dry, drained, and cooked entries may not describe the same product.
- Investigate results above 25 grams. Using the general 4-calories-per-gram estimate, pure protein would be about 25 grams per 100 calories. A higher label result usually points to rounding or mismatched values.

What this calculator cannot rank
The tool does not consider fiber, vitamins, minerals, types of fat, sodium, amino acid composition, digestibility, allergies, price, taste, or how much you plan to eat. It also cannot set a personal protein target or predict fullness.
