Protein per 100 calories = protein grams ÷ calories × 100. A serving with 18 grams of protein and 150 calories provides 12 grams of protein per 100 calories. This is sometimes called a protein-to-calorie ratio or protein density. Those names are useful shorthand, but always check the unit. One person may mean grams per 100 calories while another means calories per gram of protein.
The protein per 100 calories formula
Take protein and calories from the same serving on the same label. Divide the protein grams by calories, then multiply by 100:
(protein grams ÷ calories) × 100 = grams of protein per 100 calories
For a food with 20 grams of protein and 200 calories, the calculation is 20 ÷ 200 × 100 = 10 grams per 100 calories. Changing the serving size does not change the ratio if you scale both values together. Forty grams of protein and 400 calories still gives 10 grams per 100 calories.
Convert it to percent of calories from protein
Protein provides about 4 calories per gram for general label calculations. Multiply grams of protein per 100 calories by 4 to estimate the share of calories from protein. A result of 10 grams per 100 calories is about 40%. A result of 15 grams is about 60%.

Three worked examples
Example 1: one food
A snack lists 12 grams of protein and 180 calories. The calculation is 12 ÷ 180 × 100 = 6.7 grams per 100 calories. It is also about 26.7% calories from protein.
Example 2: two serving sizes
One label column lists 15 grams of protein and 280 calories per serving. Another lists 30 grams and 560 calories for the package. Both produce 5.4 grams per 100 calories because both nutrients doubled. If you accidentally use 30 grams of protein with 280 calories, you create a false result of 10.7.
Example 3: a product comparison
Product A has 20 grams of protein and 220 calories. Product B has 16 grams and 150 calories. Product A has more protein per serving, but Product B has more protein per 100 calories: 10.7 grams compared with 9.1 grams. The better choice still depends on portion size, taste, ingredients, price, and what else you want from the food.
What counts as a good protein-to-calorie ratio?
There is no universal cutoff that turns a food into a good food. Online discussions often use 10 grams per 100 calories as a quick screen. That equals about 40% of calories from protein. The scientific appendices supporting the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines use the same 40% threshold for one specific protein-density analysis, while also stating that no standardized definition exists.
That makes 10 grams a recognizable comparison point, not a rule. A food below it is not automatically low quality. Beans, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and other foods can bring fiber, fats, minerals, and useful energy along with their protein. A food above it is not automatically right for every meal.
The other common shortcut is calories per gram of protein. Divide calories by protein grams. A 200-calorie food with 20 grams of protein costs 10 calories for each gram of protein. Lower is more protein-efficient under that measure. It is the inverse of protein per calorie, so do not compare the two numbers directly.
How to compare food labels fairly
- Use one label basis. Copy calories and protein from the same serving, 100-gram column, or whole-package column.
- Check the product state. Dry, prepared, drained, and cooked values may describe different amounts of water and added ingredients.
- Use the portion you might eat. The ratio stays constant, but total protein and calories still depend on your portion.
- Compare foods that could fill the same role. Comparing two yogurts or two snack bars answers a clearer question than ranking yogurt against cooking oil.
- Read beyond the front label. “Protein” on the package does not tell you how much protein arrives with the calories.
The FDA explains that Nutrition Facts values are usually based on one serving, while some packages show a second column for the whole container. Serving size reflects what people typically consume. It is not a recommendation for how much to eat.

What protein density leaves out
The ratio measures protein quantity relative to calories. It does not measure protein quality. Reviews of protein-quality methods look at essential amino acid composition and digestibility, which cannot be recovered from two numbers on a standard label.
It also leaves out fiber, vitamins, minerals, types of fat, sodium, added sugar, allergens, price, convenience, and enjoyment. Broader nutrient-density models intentionally use several nutrients rather than protein alone. Calling the ratio “protein density” does not make it a complete nutrient-density score.
Energy density is different too. Energy density usually means calories per gram of food. Water-rich foods can have low energy density even when their protein-per-calorie ratio is modest. Research on energy density and appetite does not validate protein per 100 calories as a satiety calculator.
Very low-calorie entries need extra care
When calories approach zero, the ratio becomes unstable. Label rounding can produce a huge result, and zero calories cannot be used as the denominator at all. Check the serving amount and use more precise source data if a tiny serving creates an implausible answer.
A ratio is not a daily target

Using the general estimate of 4 calories per gram, pure protein would provide about 25 grams per 100 calories. A label-based result meaningfully above 25 suggests mismatched servings, rounding, or incorrect data.
Should I compare foods per serving or per 100 calories?
Use per 100 calories to compare protein efficiency. Use per serving to understand what you will actually eat. Looking at both prevents a small serving from appearing more useful than it is.
Does a higher ratio mean a food is more filling?
Not by itself. Protein can influence appetite, but fullness also depends on portion volume, fiber, water, fat, food form, eating context, and the individual. This calculator does not predict satiety.
