Short answer

Protein × 4 + carbohydrate × 4 + fat × 9 gives an estimate. A small gap from the printed calories can come from separately rounded numbers, fiber, sugar alcohols, or food-specific energy factors. A large gap is a reason to check the serving, unit, or database entry before blaming the math.

First, compare the same serving

Many surprising mismatches are comparison problems. One source may show a single serving while another shows the whole container or values per 100 grams. A database entry can also be attached to the wrong serving size.

  1. Match per serving with per serving, or per 100 grams with per 100 grams.
  2. Check the servings-per-container line.
  3. Confirm whether the weight is cooked or uncooked.
  4. Make sure the database food matches the exact product and unit.

If the grams you ate differ from the label serving, use the serving-size formula before comparing calories with macros. To compare a package label with an app record, use the food database entry checker. If the gap is still hundreds of calories, ordinary label rounding is unlikely to be the whole explanation.

The displayed values are rounded

On US labels, calories and nutrients are not always printed to their underlying precision. FDA guidance allows calories up to 50 to be rounded to the nearest 5-calorie increment and calories above 50 to the nearest 10. The displayed macro grams are rounded too.

That means you are often multiplying three rounded macro values, then comparing the result with a separately rounded calorie value. Several small differences can accumulate even when the label follows the rules.

Total carbohydrate is not always a simple 4

The FDA definition of total carbohydrate includes dietary fiber. Sugar alcohols also have specific labeling rules. These components do not always contribute energy in the same way as digestible carbohydrate, so multiplying every displayed carbohydrate gram by 4 can overstate the energy represented by that line.

4/4/9 uses general factors

The familiar formula assigns 4 calories per gram to protein and carbohydrate and 9 to fat. USDA references also document food-specific Atwater factors. For example, the factors used for protein, fat, or carbohydrate can vary by food group.

The simple formula is still useful. It is fast, understandable, and good at spotting an entry that is far outside a reasonable range. It just should not be treated as an exact reverse-engineering tool for every label.

What should you put in your food log?

For a packaged food, keep the printed serving and nutrition values unless you have a clear reason to correct the entry. Use the calculated calories as a sanity check, especially when a community database record looks unusual.

Consistency matters more than forcing every tiny discrepancy to disappear. Nutrition values are estimates, and neither this guide nor the calculator provides a personal calorie or macro target.
