There is no fixed calorie value per step
Two people can take the same number of steps and get different estimates. Body weight affects the energy calculation. Step length changes the distance. Pace changes both walking time and the activity intensity assigned to that time.
For a closer distance estimate, measure several normal steps and divide the distance by the number of steps. Keep the unit beside the value correct.
How this calculator estimates the walk
The tool converts steps and average step length into distance. It divides that distance by the selected pace to estimate time, then applies a MET value from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities.
Total calories = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × minutes
The pace choices represent level walking on a firm surface: 2.8 MET at 2.0 to 2.4 mph, 3.8 MET at 2.8 to 3.4 mph, and 4.8 MET at 3.5 to 3.9 mph. Real walks rarely stay at one exact speed, so treat the output as a planning estimate.
Active and total calories answer different questions
Total calories include the energy your body would have used at rest during those minutes. Active calories subtract that resting portion by using MET minus 1 in the same equation. A watch, exercise machine, or app may display either number, sometimes without making the distinction obvious.
If two estimates differ by roughly the resting portion, they may be using different definitions rather than completely different walking data.
Why the result may not match your watch
A watch may use heart rate, wrist movement, age, device-specific equations, and a detected workout. This calculator uses the inputs you can see. Neither method directly measures the oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange used in laboratory energy testing.
A systematic review of 158 publications found that some consumer wearables measured steps accurately in laboratory settings, while none of the reviewed brands met the review's accuracy criteria for energy expenditure. Another systematic review and meta-analysis found that energy-expenditure accuracy varied by activity type.

Do not automatically add the result to TDEE
If the activity setting in your TDEE estimate already represents your normal walking, adding these calories again can count the same movement twice. The active-calorie result can help compare one walk with another, but it does not automatically become extra calories to eat.
Walking also matters beyond a calorie number. A modest estimate does not make the walk pointless, and a large estimate does not guarantee a particular weight change.
Common questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on step length. Divide 160,934 centimetres by your step length in centimetres. A 75 cm step works out to about 2,146 steps per mile.
Does incline change calories burned?
Yes. Hills and treadmill incline generally raise the energy cost compared with level walking, but this calculator does not model grade. Choose the level-ground result as a baseline rather than pretending the incline is known.
Can I use a phone step count?
Yes, as a rough input. Missed steps, extra movement counted as steps, and whether you carried the phone can all affect the total.
