Reverse weighing is useful when food sticks to the utensil, goes straight into a pan, or is added more than once. Common examples are peanut butter, cream cheese, mayonnaise, oil, honey, dressing, and sauce.

The method changes where you measure the serving. It does not change the nutrition calculation. You still need label values or another suitable nutrition reference for the same food.

Method 1: use the tare button

  1. Place the scale on a firm, level surface and choose grams.
  2. Remove the lid from the jar or bottle.
  3. Put the container on the scale and wait for the reading to settle.
  4. Press tare or zero. The display should return to 0 g.
  5. Remove, scoop, or pour the food you plan to use.
  6. Return the container to the same position if you lifted it from the scale.
  7. Record the magnitude of the negative reading.

NIST describes tare as accounting for container weight so a scale can show net weight. Its kitchen guidance advises pressing zero before each new measurement. Reverse weighing applies the same idea to a removal instead of an addition.

Method 2: subtract before and after weights

Some scales turn off quickly, lose the tared state, or handle negative values poorly. Two ordinary readings avoid that problem:

  1. Weigh the open container before serving and record the number.
  2. Remove the food.
  3. Weigh the open container again with the same setup.
  4. Subtract the second number from the first.

Keep the lid, spoon, and any loose packaging consistent. Adding the lid for only one reading can create a much larger difference than the food itself.

Turn the measured grams into calories and macros

The FDA says a US Nutrition Facts serving usually shows a household measure followed by a metric amount in grams. The listed calories and nutrients usually apply to that serving. Use the gram amount because it connects directly to the scale.

Suppose the jar label lists 190 Calories, 7 g protein, 7 g carbohydrate, and 16 g fat per 32 g serving. You reverse weigh 18 g:

  1. Serving factor: 18 ÷ 32 = 0.5625.
  2. Calories: 190 × 0.5625 = 106.875, or about 107.
  3. Protein: 7 × 0.5625 = about 3.9 g.
  4. Carbohydrate: 7 × 0.5625 = about 3.9 g.
  5. Fat: 16 × 0.5625 = 9 g.

Keep the printed calories as the calorie source. Labels can use rounding rules, and a fresh calculation from the macro grams may not reproduce the displayed calories exactly. The label calorie and macro guide explains why.

When reverse weighing is the easier method

Weighing on a plate and weighing from the container can produce the same amount when both are done correctly. The useful difference is cleanup and timing.

Leftovers are the most common reason to reach for it. What to log when you do not finish your food covers when the adjustment is worth making and when the leftover is small enough to ignore.

  • Sticky spreads: The food can go straight from jar to toast without scraping it into a separate dish first.
  • Sauces while eating: You can add more later and measure each removal without moving the plate back to the scale.
  • Oil for a pan: The bottle can be measured before and after pouring, although oil left in the pan or discarded later still affects how much is eaten.
  • Shared containers: A before-and-after reading measures what left the container, but it does not tell you how that amount was divided between people.

Mistakes that can move the number

  1. Changing the container setup. Use the same lid, spoon, cap, and packaging both times.
  2. Switching units. Keep both readings in grams if the label serving is in grams.
  3. Reading the sign as nutrition. Negative grams describe a lighter tared load, not negative calories.
  4. Using a volume serving without its gram equivalent. A tablespoon can vary with how it is filled. Use the printed gram amount when available.
  5. Mixing label columns. Do not pair calories per serving with macros per 100 g.
  6. Exceeding the scale capacity. A large jar plus its contents may be too heavy for a small scale.
  7. Expecting more precision than the display provides. A scale that reads whole grams cannot prove tenths of a gram.

If the ending weight is higher than the starting weight, stop and check the setup. The container may have picked up its lid, a utensil, spilled food, or a different unit.

Use the method where it reduces real uncertainty

Recent calorie-tracking discussions repeatedly mention peanut butter, oil, dressing, and familiar portions that grew over time. They also show that the tare button is not obvious to every first-time scale owner. That supports a clearer workflow, not a demand for perfect measurement.

A home scale reading and a rounded food label still produce an estimate. Repeatedly moving a jar on and off a one-gram scale can change the last digit. For everyday logging, recording 18 g instead of pretending it is exactly 18.00 g is the more honest result.

Use reverse weighing when it makes the meal easier to record. Skip it when a labeled single portion, a saved repeat meal, or a reasonable estimate already answers the question. If weighing food increases anxiety, guilt, or pressure to compensate with restriction or exercise, pause and consider speaking with a qualified clinician or registered dietitian.
