Macro percentages describe calories

A macro percentage is the share of planned energy assigned to that nutrient. The calculation has two steps. First, multiply daily calories by the percentage. Then convert those calories to grams. The percentages to grams guide works through the same two steps with a full example.

The formulas

Protein grams = calories × protein percentage ÷ 100 ÷ 4. Carbohydrate grams use the same formula. Fat grams = calories × fat percentage ÷ 100 ÷ 9.

The different divisor matters. A gram of fat contributes more than twice the general energy estimate of a gram of protein or carbohydrate, so equal percentages do not produce equal gram amounts.

A 30 / 40 / 30 example

At 2,000 planned calories, 30% protein allocates 600 calories, which converts to 150 grams. A 40% carbohydrate share allocates 800 calories, or 200 grams. A 30% fat share also allocates 600 calories, but that converts to about 66.7 grams because the calculation divides by 9.

Four equal meals would average 37.5 grams of protein, 50 grams of carbohydrate, and about 16.7 grams of fat. Real meals do not need to be equal. Use the macros per meal calculator when you want different shares for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks.

Do not calculate the split from gram weight

Adding 150 grams of protein, 200 grams of carbohydrate, and 66.7 grams of fat gives 416.7 total grams. Dividing each macro by that total would describe weight, not energy. It would not reproduce the 30 / 40 / 30 calorie split.

Reference ranges are broad, not a personal prescription

Health Canada's current Dietary Reference Intake table lists adult Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges of 45% to 65% of energy from carbohydrate, 10% to 35% from protein, and 20% to 35% from fat. The National Academies reference table reports the same ranges.

Those ranges describe healthy populations eating mixed diets. They do not select one exact ratio, account for every medical condition, or replace an individualized plan. A percentage can also produce an awkward protein amount when total calories are unusually low or high. If protein is the decision you care about, compare the calculated grams with the body-weight-based or clinician-set target you already use.

The result is planning math

The general 4/4/9 factors do not make food labels exact. Rounding, fiber, sugar alcohols, alcohol, and food-specific energy factors can create a difference between macro-derived calories and a printed total. A plan that allocates 100% among protein, carbohydrate, and fat also leaves no separate share for alcohol.
